Seize the Day

14 Aug

Today is August 14th. Here are a few events that occurred on this day in history, courtesy of

  • 1281: During Kublai Khan’s 2nd Invasion of Japan, his invading Chinese fleet of 3,500 vessels disappears in a typhoon near Japan.
  • 1559: Spanish explorer de Luna lands in Pensacola Bay, Florida.
  • 1765: Massachusetts colonists challenge British rule by an Elm (Liberty Tree).
  • 1842: Second Seminole War declared over by Colonel Worth; Indians are moved from Florida to Oklahoma.
  • 1862: Abraham Lincoln receives the 1st group of African-Americans to confer with a U.S. president.
  • 1882: Queen Victoria receives Zulu chief Cetewayo.
  • 1908: Race riot in Springfield, Illinois.
  • 1925: Mount Rushmore 1st proposed.

The thing about history is, it’s being written everyday. We may not govern a country, but we all rule something, even if only our words and deeds. If you teach, or have children, you shape the future every day.

Affect the world around you. How will you spend today? On the job? Writing a novel? Taking care of children? Seize the day!
