Trying New Authors

10 Aug

As a voracious reader, there are times I get stuck in a rut. Yes, I have a list of favorite authors–contemporary and historical–but even then sometimes my mind needs challenged in a different way. Most of my reading times happens during summer, since the kids are out of school, and I take a short break from writing anything fresh. This summer, I decided to step out of my comfortable “reading box” and try some new-to-me authors. I’m so glad I did. Here are a few authors I’ve now added to my Favorites list.

from a distance

Tamera Alexander

Though I write contemporary romance, 90% of what I read is historical romance. And this author blew me away. Her characters are so genuine and real they practically jump off the page. Her books can be read as standalone novels or as a series. After reading this one, I devoured the entire series and can’t wait to read more.

through waters deep

Sarah Sundin

This author hooked me immediately with her Nancy Drew-like mystery plot. She produces strong characters with integrity amidst the enchanting and dangerous era of the 1940’s.

catching katieRobin Lee Hatcher

With a writing-style that snatched my attention immediately, Robin’s books are full of spunk and heart. She has a line of historical romances as well as contemporary. I will definitely be reading more of both.

Your turn. Have you read new authors lately you can’t get enough of? What’s your criteria for trying a new author?

~Candice Sue Patterson writes Modern-Vintage Romance–where the past and present collide with faith. Her debut novel How to Charm a Beekeeper’s Heart will release in 2016 with Pelican Book Group. To learn more, visit

Yes, I have tried a few new authors this summer. “Irish Meadows” by Susan Anne Mason and “The Highwayman” – a novella – by Shannon McNear are the two that jump to mind.

I have always been a voracious reader & somehow was blessed enough to become a reviewer. I am now frequently offered books by authors I haven’t read before and am constantly adding new favorites to my not-to-be-missed list. All of the authors you mentioned are on that list as well as too many others to share here. A few fairly recent additions are Lori Benton, Joanne Bisvhoff, Dawn Crandall, and Sarah Loudin Thomas.
